Far from the noise of the surface, where humans and technology call the shots, lurks an underground world full of life and cooperation. Here, plants, organisms and fungi whisper undisturbed in their own language. Amsterdam-based collective Touki Delphine believes that learning to listen to this underground life can be a first step towards a better balanced life on earth.
This summer, it’s going to happen: The car is going down. It has brought us a lot: individual freedom, adventure, convenience, and eroticism, but its time has come. It has to face its end.
Touki Delphine composed the music for this spectacle and performs on stage with the ensemble Asko|Schönberg and opera singer Bernadeta Astari. Het Zomeroffer (The Summer Sacrifice) is based on the famous The Rite of Spring (Le sacre du printemps) by Igor Stravinsky. Where in the original ballet a young woman is sacrificed, in our version, every evening for 35 summer evenings, the four-wheeler of someone from the audience will die. Someone who is ready to take a step back to let the earth catch its breath. Those who want to survive must make sacrifices. And a sacrifice is never painless…

Touki Delphine’s Oh, Alexander is a series of open studio multidisciplinary presentations. In these informal, eclectic evenings, Touki Delphine highlight elements from one of their key sources of inspiration; Andrea Wulf’s ‘The Invention of Nature’ about the life and work of Alexander Von Humboldt. They link the inspiration to their recent work, and explore the distorted balance between nature, humans and technology. Oh Alexander evenings are in collaboration with compelling specialists and other creatives whose work relates to the theme of the edition.
This second episode of Oh Alexander takes place at Wednesday 22nd 8.30 pm. We are starting with a performance of Transmission and the evening will include a presentation from assistant professor Vasilis Kokkoris (followed by a Q& A)
Vasilis Kokkoris After receiving his PhD from the University of British Columbia (UBC) on microbial ecology and completing his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Ottawa and at Agriculture/Agri-Food Canada, Vasilis Kokkoris obtained a position as assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His work centers on microbial ecology and genetics, focusing particularly on one of the most widespread symbiotic organisms on our planet known as mycorrhizal fungi. His research and photomicrography, demonstrating the unique aspects of their cell organization and network complexity, have won multiple global awards and have brought attention to the unseen soil microbial world.
Doyle is one of the four co-artistic directors of Touki Delphine as well as a pianist and composer. On November 23rd in our studio at De Sloot in Amsterdam, he will perform together with our newest installation, TRANSMISSION. Doyle will be playing pieces from his new album “For Afie” (out on Excelsior Recordings) and similar improvisations, together with fellow Touki Delphine member John van Oostrum, who will operate the installation live and improvise together with Doyle.
The music on “For Afie” is based on improvisations I played for my wife during the birth of our son. At the time, my sister-in-law was pregnant, and asked if I wouldn’t mind recording some piano to add to her birthing playlist. What she meant was a short piece recorded with a telephone, but in my recent experience of playing for my wife, the length, space, and a combination of calm and distraction that are helpful during labor wouldn’t be capturable in one short piece. I perhaps overcompensated, and improvised an album’s worth of material with a couple of nice microphones around my home piano where I had played for my wife. A few months later, my niece Afie was born with those recordings as a soundtrack in the background. In September 2023, Excelsior Recordings in Amsterdam digitally released the album “For Afie”, and this event on November 23rd will be the first live performance of that music and serve as the CD release show. I’m excited to perform this music and to combine two of my artistic worlds by playing with TRANSMISSION. It is a compelling combination that I hope will produce intriguing and delightful music, and if nothing else, make for a relaxing evening. – Chris Doyle.

Als permanente bewoners van de Sloot openen BOG, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot en Touki Delphine hun rommelige thuishaven. Ze verwennen je in hun geheel verzorgde Art Spa met inslaapkamers, uitslaapzalen en een dansvloer.
Vibreer mee met het schimmelnetwerk tijdens Transmission van Touki Delphine, adem uit in het Stiltemuseum, dompel jezelf onder in het klankbad van Echo’s Chamber en leef je daarna uit op de dansvloer. Kom, en neem al je overspannen vrienden mee.

Echo’s Chamber is een ruimte die gewijd is aan stilte en het luisteren naar de wereld om ons heen. Ons universum is voortdurend in beweging en trilling. Van de planeten die zich verplaatsen tot ons eigen hart dat klopt. Elke atoom, elke cel, elk orgaan en elk bot in ons lichaam trilt en deze trilling produceert geluid. Dit geluid beïnvloedt elk levend wezen en wordt niet alleen ‘gehoord’ door onze oren, maar door elke cel in ons lichaam.
Echo’s Chamber is ontworpen om de wereld die groter is dan de mens te eren. We maken altijd deel uit van een web van relaties, een gemeenschap van levende wezens. Het betreden van deze kamer is een manier om terug te keren naar het vibrerende universum. Hier kunnen we ons opnieuw verbinden met ons lichaam. Ons lichaam is de deur waardoor we toegang krijgen tot het complexe, onderling verbonden web waar we altijd al deel van uitmaakten. In Echo’s Chamber kunnen we luisteren naar de trillingen van alle lichamen in en om ons heen. We kunnen het menselijke auteurschap loslaten en ons in plaats daarvan laten begeleiden door de veelstemmigheid van het universum.

Transmission
Transmission doet je dwalen door een geheimzinnig ondergronds netwerk; een flikkerend web van speakers, slangetjes, relais, trilmotortjes, aircobuizen, remleidingen en vloeistofpompen. Je ligt in een autostoel en om je heen ontvouwt zich een zinderende compositie van licht, vloeistoffen en geluid. Hoe klinkt deze wereld? Hoe beweegt het zich? En wat vertelt het ons?
Geen plek op aarde is meer vrij van menselijke invloeden. Onze geluiden en die van onze machines trillen tot op de stilste plekken door. Hoe gaan we om met het verlies van stilte en ongerepte natuur? Transmission is het vijfde deel van een reeks interactieve muzikale installaties, na onder andere Firebird en Relay. Deze keer vond het collectief inspiratie in de grond, waar een symbiotisch weefsel van boomwortels en schimmeldraden boodschappen en voedingsstoffen voor elkaar overbrengt.

STILTEMUSEUM

Wanneer je in een willekeurig woordenboek het woord ‘stilte’ opzoekt krijg je doorgaans een definitie die neerkomt op ”de afwezigheid van geluid”. Omgekeerd heeft niemand het over ‘ontbreken van stilte’ als geluid moet worden uitgelegd. Geluid is de norm in onze levens. Het Stiltemuseum zet juist de stilte op een sokkel.
Maker Sanne Vanderbruggen maakte door de jaren heen geluidsopnames van verschillende soorten stiltes die ze hoorde. Een station tijdens een treinstaking, een kapel in een ziekenhuis, een duinpan, de stilte in Amsterdam na de uitschakeling van Ajax in de Champions League, een club tijdens lockdown. Deze verzameling wordt nu samengebald, geëxposeerd, beschreven en verbeeld in het Stiltemuseum, een tijdelijk museum in het theater.
Het Stiltemuseum is een ode aan de stilte in al zijn verschijningsvormen. Evenals een ode aan de onuitputtelijke, soms maniacale, aandoenlijke maar vooral onmogelijke queeste van de mens om stiltes te vatten. Om de stilte te horen.

Na haar solo’s ONE. en ALL. maakt Lisa Verbelen dit keer geen solo. In TWO. vormt ze een duo samen met gelauwerd jazzmuzikant Hendrik Lasure. Vertrekkend vanuit het thema tegenstellingen en geïnspireerd door het taoïsme en hiphop maken Lisa en Hendrik samen een muziekalbum en met regisseur Suze Milius een theatraal concert.
TWO. is een oefening om het denken in tegenstellingen om te draaien en te ervaren wat er zich tussen twee uitersten bevindt. Wat er gebeurt als twee mensen elkaar ontmoeten.
Verwacht een muzikaal en theatraal concert, woorden én muziek die je voelt én denkt, even hard als zacht, net zo donker als licht, met rook en vuur, water in de woestijn, niet lelijk, niet mooi, helemaal yin en yang, over you and me.

As part of the Nieuwe Makersregeling, Touki Delphine supports emerging artist Karlijn Hamer in her artistic development. Currently, Karlijn is creating her latest performance: Siriana, My Friend. She will present some first sketches at the O-Festival in Rotterdam.
In a sensory installation designed by visual artist Nieke Koek, Karlijn builds a musical dream world where she documents her connection with her childhood best friend Siriana, who has autism. Using memories from their childhood and their present-day friendship, she takes the audience into the inner world of someone with autism.
The performance brings attention to the experiences of women with autism and makes visible a perspective that is often invisible in our society.

We are not only working on our own projects, but we are also busy creating a light installation and music for the performance Kind van het licht by Ferhat Kaplan. In his work, Ferhat Kaplan is always looking for ways to make society more inclusive for the next generation. He addresses difficult topics in a lighthearted manner. In this performance, Ferhat introduces the audience to the Alevi ethnic group and explores the question, “am I a good person?”
John has designed a new work specifically for Ferhat that serves as a light installation within this performance. Chris has written the music for it. It is a very pleasant and special collaboration with an important message and a poetic personal text.

In this very first pilot episode of Oh Alexander, Touki Delphine will host an open studio evening at their workspace in De Sloot Theaterbroedplaats in Amsterdam. The evening will include a presentation from scientist / mathematician Justin Stewart (followed by a Q& A), a sneak preview of Touki Delphine’s new installation ‘TRANSMISSION’ and an inspiring film or documentary related to the topic.
Justin Stewart is a doctoral candidate in evolutionary biology at VU Amsterdam and ecological data scientist at SPUN (Society for protection of underground networks). Stewart will share their presentation “The evolutionary biogeography of underground networks”, and will field a question and answer session following their presentation.
