A retro-futuristic egg of light and sound, made from more than 100 recycled car taillights. Perched three metres high on its pedestal, THE EGG vibrates, gently sways, blinks hysterically and spaces groovily to a soundtrack of electronic beats and sounds from nature.
The egg was born from the rib of FIREBIRD, Touki Delphine’s iconic light and sound installation made from more than 600 recycled car taillights, in which Stravinsky’s Firebird comes to life. An overwhelming spectacle that was described by Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant as: “As if God were gaming on stained-glass windows.”
Just as the firebird rises from its own ashes, Touki Delphine brings discarded car parts from the scrapyard back to life in FIREBIRD. But before Firebird can rise again, it must first hatch from an egg.
Together, the two works tell a circular story of decay, transformation and new life; from scrapyard to artwork of light and sound.
FIREBIRD now exists in three versions: a European, an American and a Chinese one. All three are made from materials salvaged from scrap cars at local junkyards and are currently touring leading arts institutions across their respective continents.
